The "Un-Professionals"
The “Un-Professionals” are like a piece of food stuck in your molars: they irritate the hell out of you, and finally coerce you into profoundly ungainly behaviour in public, when you open your mouth wide and excavate it like Tutenkhamen’s tomb.
Why am I ranting about this particular breed? It may amuse you to know that I had this particularly vivid dream that I woke up from this morning, with a pounding headache, and stress levels the height of Mount Everest. I dreamt that when I suggested to a former colleague of mine to investigate the features of a new version of some software, she turned ballistic, and I had to strenuously reinforce to everyone present that I was only trying to help, following which I got so upset that I marched up to the CEO – an unknown-to-me bloke named Roger – and quit the job most unprofessionally. I woke up to Roger attempting his best HR phrases on me, which I angrily spurned.
I have absolutely no idea what triggered this dream, but it brought back memories that I would have cheerfully give an arm and a leg to forget about. I remembered them all: the one who didn’t complete his work on time because “he did not feel like it”; the one who promoted his new math of 3 months=1 year of experience with almost evangelistic zeal; the one whose idea of work consisted of waltzing in an hour before lunch, taking an hour-long lunch break, and “working” for another hour after that; the one who assumed marketing calls included hour-long pit stops at his house; the one who came in at opening time sharp and left at closing time sharp, and played games throughout her day; the one who didn’t meet his deadlines because others in his group simply did not have his “enthusiasm and devotion” to work; the one who wanted to quit without any notice period because he could presumably finish in half-a day one month’s pending work; the one who argued vociferously about his raise not because of his performance, but because they was expecting a child (wonder which performance he had in mind)… ok, I’ll stop now!
Worst of all is the politicking. I’ve been in groups as small as three and four, and it amazes me to see how everything other than work takes precedence. Maybe it is just a case of sour grapes, for I’ve never been able to play the game of “one-up” well!
Which reminds me of an article in today’s paper. I digress, but this was pretty interesting to me. The Deendayal Research Institute in Satna district of Madhya Pradesh estimates that the direct monthly public expenditure on each Member of Parliament is Rs. 3 lakhs (supposedly a conservative estimate, and not including indirect costs), which is 150 times the per capita income of an Indian!! There are 543 sitting MPs currently, not considering the 5,269 MLAs and MLCs! The mind truly boggles!
On a lighter note, at a birthday party recently, my ex-colleague asked me if I had taken on more people in my practice. I was most emphatic in my reply. Never again! I had had enough people management to last me a lifetime! To my chagrin, I noticed the look on his face as he moved away – he had worked on my team! It was too late to undo the damage, for he was one of the most professional people I had worked with!
So, what's your best worst experience?

At the "level" where I stand ..therez hardly any scope for such games,I guess, the higher-up U reach in a organization, more likely U are to run against such politicos.
Just had this one bad tiff with my boss..It doesn't really help to have a Boss, who can't estimate how much time it will take for each assignment.. Sometimes for a thing which wud take half n hour he will allocate 2/3 days & Vice-versa.
So,there was this colleague who had habit of "sitting" over finished tasks..He won't go back & tell our Boss that he is done..& can take next assignment.
Whereas I have (or rather had!!) this habit that if I finish my work earlier than the scheduled time..I wud straightaway go 2 my Boss..& ask "I am done, Whats Next ??"
On one such occasion,as usual I went and stood in front of my Boss & he says to me ,this guy (my colleague) is buried neck deep in work.. why don't U help him & take-over his other tasks..I lost my cool & said..I don't mind taking over "New" tasks, But, I don't wanna help this guy in finishing his other assignments... (coz I knew he is just twiddling his thumbs..)
My Boss looked aghast & said that I am NOT a Good Team player , We all have to work for each other in a TEAM, Blah Blah Blah & that he didn't expect such "Un-Professional" attitude from me etc. etc.. I cud have spilled the beans and bitched about my colleague.. But I decided not to. Anyways it was my image which got the battering!!
Lesson learnt.. Now I don't show Gandhian honesty..Instead I too twiddle my thumbs (or rather doodle on DB) after finishing my tasks.. & wait for my Boss to ask the status ..rather than me going forth & telling him..
P.S. : Hey Ano,Thanx for leaving Ur footprints on my
blog :)
hehe...i think u'd probably hate to work with me ano...i am like wally in dilbert...i believe that corporate culture is so fucked up that one should never have any ideals...i try to get by with the least effort on my part...and i dont even feel bad about it...:-))
but then, i've only worked in large corporations...so this apathy may not be a great thing in a small group...not sure how i'll change if i am thrown into a small group...:-)
sigh! ! when i joined teaching field i had great expectations, but they all got crashed when i saw ppl going to whatever extent they can to make themselves comfortable.they dont deserve it but they wouldn mind it at all:)
a collegue of mine shows my workload as his at the performance appraisal?? and the first time i discovered it i almost went to hit him:))
dmx - why would i hate to work with u? it was iblu who can't stand office gossip! ;)
all said and done, of course, there are wonderful ppl u come across at work who are such an absolute delight to work with!
i am all for having fun at the workplace - have no issues with ppl goofing off - but i guess everything has its place.
thank u guyz for the patient hearing! :D
Having nightmares about colleagues?? Time to take a vacation to the Caribbeans!! 4 day, 3 night stay, airfare included, only $999 per person!!
That does sound like the little pop-up ads, dont it? :)
LOL @ "excavate it like Tutenkhamen’s tomb"!!
[pardon me for the blog length comment, but hey you asked for it.. ;)]
I have been with same company and the group since the start of my career, but a lot of people have come and gone.. some good, some bad, some ugly.. but I guess the consultant guy who worked with me for a month tops the list of the ugly..
when he started the contract he was working with someone else so he was all chummy with me.. talking about everything other than work, like his music band [he's a giutarist in some band that he owns], his weekends.. yada yada yada.. [mainly cos he just assumed me not worthy of intelligent conversations] but later I was supposed to lead that effort so he had to report to me.. his attitude changed overnite.. he was extremely cold to me.. argued about everything I asked him to do.. his argument - I have seen more world and know more than you, hence I am correct [there was also a hint of "and you are a woman" underlying his arguments]..
he tried everything to defy me.. he would not work on things I asked him to, not submit his reports to me instead go directly to the clients/manager... once on a Friday he leaves work at 11 in the morning, calls me from the airport, tells me that his stuff aint working for some xyz reasons.. and btw he decided to take off early [!!] that day.. I told him that he should have informed me before and I dont appreciate such last minute surprises..
he storms into my cube monday morning and says, "since you seem to be having so many problems with me, maybe I should just quit and not come, you can explain to your manager whatever", to which I was expected to pee in my pants and 'apologize'. thankfully I kept my manager quite updated with the problem-member of the team.. I shrugged my shoulders and said "Suit yourself, just that I am not the person to notify of such issues".. to make a point he quit the next day and my manager was so glad that he did that, cos he has been thinking of ways to terminate the contract with no monetary losses... :D
thats my best worst "Unprofessional" experience!!
lol funny - may i join you on your Carribbean cruise?
hmm.... haven't been working long enuf to have known them all :-)
agree with buck tho and i think i wud do very well with small motivated grps. like my master's project group was a gr8 exp. :-D
